General Information
TEMPLE HILL SALTPETER CAVE
Temple Hill Saltpeter Cave is a solution cave located in the community of Temple Hill in Barren County, Kentucky. The cave is also known as Skaggs Creek Saltpeter Cave or Payne Cave. Formed millions of years ago in the cherty limestone of the Fort Payne Formation, the cave has been frequented by Native Americans in pre-historic times, mined by early settlers and pioneers at the beginning of the 19th Century, and converted into a tourist attraction in the early 20th Century. For almost a century, the 1.5 mile labyrinth has been privately owned, welcoming (hopefully with permission) only thrill seekers who wish to experience the local legend firsthand.
